Marianne has a big heart, and an incredibly free soul.
From the very first moment, she let us into her home, which seems like a portal to a world that is not affected by the frenzy and chaos that fill our lives. She opened the doors to show us her lifestyle and get closer to her music.
Marianne, a yoga teacher and musician, is not professionally different from what she is as a person: chameleon-like, pindaric, coloured and magnetic. From the reason why it’s better to buy vintage and support small companies, to the influence that music and its various “eras” have had on her way of dressing, up to yoga outfits and self-confidence and in her own uniqueness, Marianne ’s In Da Closet is a real mystical experience.
Are you ready to leave with us for this trip? And remember, don’t forget the appropriate soundtrack! Now playing: “Red Desert, Mirage.”
Yours is a unique and inimitable style, rich in so many different influences that mix up with one another. How would you define your current style?
I love to be personal, I choose to dress according to what I like. My style is hard to define, but perhaps I’d say Mystic/Vintage.
What was your style/closet like growing up? How has your aesthetic taste changed over the years?
My closet has always been full of vintage items! [laughs] When I was 16, I fell in love with psychedelia, and then, thanks to my traveling, I became more and more interested in contaminations, a bit like in my music.
“Thanks to my traveling, I became more and more interested in contaminations, a bit like in my music.”
You’ve recently posted about how you would want to have fewer and fewer clothes and use them not only with their main purpose but in other endless ways. How would you describe your relationship with fashion?
I now define it as Conscious. A while ago, it wasn’t like that, as soon as I saw something interesting in fast fashion stores, I would buy it right away, but now I’ve realized that not only is it useless, but this mechanism is also harmful to the world and economy. I’d rather buy clothes from small companies or young businesses that choose sustainable or vintage fabrics.
You’re very fond of vintage (in fact, you often talk about how great it is to own unique garments and, at the same time, play a part in not introducing new clothes into the world and put a limit to fast fashion): when did you start approaching the world of second-hand?
I’ve always had this passion. My parents often used to take me to flea markets and that’s something I never stopped doing.
“I’d rather buy clothes from small companies or young businesses that choose sustainable or vintage fabrics.”
What garments/accessories best represent your style?
Nothing could represent me better than nudity [laughs]. I’m joking! Rings (with gemstones full of energy) and a pair of 1960s boots, for sure.
What’s your everyday look like?
Turtleneck sweater, flared trousers, knee-high platform boots.
“Nothing could represent me better than nudity”
What are the three must-haves in your closet?
A pair of sunglasses (maybe with colored lenses), a gorgeous vintage item like a mini triangle dress, and a pair of high-heels but as long as they’re comfortable for dancing in.
How has music and being a musician influenced your way of dressing? Does your look change between your everyday private life and your public stage life, or do you always somehow stay “the same”?
Music has helped me build a strong personality. I used to listen to Nirvana and be a punk, then I discovered my elegant side thanks to jazz, and now I have my own style that mixes things up. I like to always be extravagant, I like to play with my look, sometimes I wear a wig, a headscarf even if I just go grocery shopping. I don’t care about what people think.
“Music has helped me build a strong personality.”
You’re not only known for your music, but also for Yoga Mirage and for your yoga classes: how has yoga influenced your look, instead?
Yoga has taught me to learn to feel good in my body, appreciate it, and love my flaws, too. I started by only wearing black tracksuits, while now I like to wear colorful clothes whenever I practice yoga.
What’s the garment or accessories that would deserve a closet of their own?
Shoes, in an endless amount [laughs].
What’s the garment you should but can’t get rid of?
I usually have a very hard time getting rid of the gifts I receive because I immediately associate them with some kind of emotional content.
If you could only wear one brand from now on, which one would you choose and why?
I really like Acne, Stella McCartney for her attention to sustainability. Stiù Shop for the shoes.
You’ve recently collaborated with the brand Blondie With Love for the making of Mirage+Blondie, a pants+top outfit inspired by yoga and a Chakra, the orange one, which encloses the ability to feel emotions, the union and balance between giving and owning. How was all of this born?
The inspiration came from my latest album “Mirage,” dedicated to this very Chakra. The orange color called me and I let it guide me. Every meditation on a color tells us what we need. I liked the idea of exploring sexuality and creativity.

Nel tuo guardaroba, ne hai troppi di?
Orecchini.
In your closet, you have too many…?
Earrings.
What’s your “special” bag?
A Prada black leather backpack, now it’s out of production because it’s become vintage.
Your must-have accessory.
Glasses.
How often do you reorganize your closet?
I’m not a fan of planning things out, sometimes it can be months, sometimes I do it every week, depending on what catches my eye.
Is your closet a sacred place or do you let other people (besides us) in?
My closet is open to everybody, I love lending my things, giving away clothes or items that I know would fit someone else better than me.
What’s on top of your fashion wish list right now?
The new CamperLab (but I haven’t bought them because I don’t love to buy things I don’t need).
An outfit that you’ve worn on a live show or in a music video that you’ve loved with all yourself.
An oversized cotton trench coat in the “Lo So Cosa Fai” video we filmed in Berlin.
Please, describe your closet in one word.
Sovversive sexy and spicy.
A look (from a movie or TV series) that left you speechless.
Monica Vitti’s in “La Notte.”
The book on your nightstand right now.
“Writing Down the Bones” (amazing!)
What will the future of fashion be in your opinion?
Sustainability!
You’ve recently released your album “Mirage,” a very unusual album embracing different sonorities and mixing up music and yoga, and you’ve made a 1-hour video for Nike, on the Nike Training Club app, where your voice explains what to do, step by step, during the yoga practice. What are your next projects?
I can’t tell you, otherwise they won’t become true.
